Gregor Prugger was born in 1954 in Ortisei (province of Bolzano), where he lives and works to this day.
After serving his apprenticeship with a sculptor, Holzknecht studied at the Academy of Figurative Art in Florence, and later in Munich.
Using a variety of different materials and basing his creations on natural forms, Prugger probes and examines the links and interconnections between our socio-cultural situations. Trees and their roots are stripped of their bark, carved and finished in order to demonstrate the vulnerability of Mother Nature and, consequently, of mankind too.
This is how Prugger has re-discovered a new language in wood sculpture, with which he reveals the secrets of wood's inner being, underlining the sensations and mystical sensations that he perceives from his surroundings.
